Composed in 1945, Messiaen wrote a song cycle Harawi for a soprano and the piano. The inspiration and the title come from the South American Andes’ Quechua love songs. In Harawi, Messiaen’s own poetic text describes the journey of a pair of lovers on the other side of the world, at once ecstatic and cruel. The twelve movements in the cycle will be performed by the soprano Law Tsz Ying Joyce and the pianist Xinge Bu. Dr. Martin Lee will present a pre-concert talk in Cantonese.
